Orthodontic Treatment Mechanics and the Pre-adjusted Appliance

Dr. Terry McDonald will join Dr. Richard McLaughlin in the presentation of this first course.

Program Highlights

Case Presentation and Discussion Segment
This course presents a discussion of the MBT™ Philosophy of orthodontic treatment. This includes a brief discussion of the history of the pre-adjusted appliance system, information on bracket placement, and an efficient method of arch form management. The main emphasis of the course, however, is on intra-arch treatment mechanics. State-of-the-art mechanics using light continuous force systems are described in detail. The six stages of orthodontic treatment are reviewed using a variety of case reports. These stages include anchorage control, leveling and aligning, vertical dimension control, antero-posterior correction, space closure and finishing. This is a practical and very clinically oriented program, which will provide information that is immediately useful for the modern orthodontic practice.

Practical Segment
Each participant will begin diagnosing cases on the first day of the program using the Arnett-McLaughlin diagnostic module from Dolphin Imaging. The program will be installed on each participant's laptop computer. This will continue on each day of the program throughout the two years. Dolphin Imaging representatives will discuss various aspects of their programs with participants. Each participant will carry out an indirect bonding procedure on models of a case selected from their practice. This will be followed by the placement of lacebacks, initial archwires, rectangular steel archwires, passive wire tiebacks and active tiebacks on the MBT bracket typodont. Also, information will be provided on the use of the SmartClipT Self-Ligating Bracket. The use of the Hycon device will be demonstrated for difficult space closure cases. Each participant will be provided with MBT brackets to begin treating cases in their practice, and will be asked to provide updates on the progress of their cases at each session.

Program Format
What the Orthodontic Treatment Mechanics and the Pre-adjusted Appliance course involves:
Case Presentation and Discussion Segment
  • Historical Review - A brief discussion of the history of the pre-adjusted appliance system will be presented.
  • Bracket Placement - The three keys to bracket placement (the Andrews' references, the bracket placement chart, and the marginal ridges) are discussed. Recommendations for direct and indirect bonding are presented.
  • Leveling and Aligning - The difference between extraction and non-extraction treatment during this stage is reviewed, and suggestions for arch wire sequencing are made.
  • Arch Form - Accurate and efficient methods for establishing a stable arch form are discussed. Archwire coordination is also included in this important area.
  • Vertical Dimension Control - The mechanics of opening deep bites and closing open bites are reviewed.
  • Efficiency in Space Closure - The various methods of space closure are reviewed. Detailed information is presented on light force sliding mechanics.
  • Finishing - The important aspects of finishing are developed in this presentation.
  • Matching the Orthodontic Appliance with Appropriate Treatment Mechanics - At each stage of treatment, reasons for use of the MBT appliance are discussed. Practical Segment
  • Diagnosis and Treatment Planning using the Dolphin Arnett-McLaughlin diagnostic module
  • Dolphin Imaging representatives will discuss relevant aspects of their programs and properly install the program on each participant's laptop computer
  • Detailed information on indirect bonding procedures on a case from each participant's practice
  • Placement of lacebacks, initial archwires, rectangular steel archwires, passive wire tiebacks and active tiebacks on the MBT typodont
  • Information will be provided on the use of the SmartClip self-ligating bracket
  • Use of the Hycon device for difficult space closure cases
  • Observation of treatment procedures in Dr. McLaughlin's clinic
