Management of the Dentition Program Highlights
Case Presentation and Discussion Segment
This course describes the management and correction of specific dental problems involving each individual tooth. Multiple issues related to the incisors, with case examples, are presented. The mechanics of cuspid movement are described, as well as the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of impacted cuspids. The extraction verses non-extraction issue is reviewed in detail. First and second molars are discussed relative to anchorage control, distalization, and vertical control. This course closely coincides with the material covered in Dr. Bennett's and Dr. McLaughlin's textbook entitled "Orthodontic Management of the Dentition with the Pre-adjusted Appliance".
Practical Segment
Each participant will continue diagnosing cases using the Dolphin Arnett-McLaughlin diagnostic module. Cases begun in each participant's office will be reviewed. Miscellaneous clinical products (in addition to brackets and archwires) will be reviewed. This course will focus on practice management, and will include sessions on office structure, initial exams and consultations, scheduling, and accounts payable and receivable.
Program Format
What the Management of the Dentition course involves:
Case Presentation and Discussion Segment
- Incisors - Specific concerns of upper central and lateral incisors, as well as lower incisors will be discussed. Emphasis will be placed on incisor trauma, congenital absence, tooth fit and tooth size discrepancy.
- Cuspids - The critical tip and torque issues of cuspids will be discussed. Also the management of blocked out cuspids and impacted cuspids will be presented.
- First Bicuspids - The extraction of first bicuspids has been a controversial subject throughout the history of orthodontics. This controversy will be analyzed in detail. Also, the indications for upper first bicuspid extraction only will be discussed.
- Second Bicuspids - The rationale, advantages and disadvantages of second bicuspid extraction will be presented.
- First Molars - The importance of the first molars will be emphasized relative to stabilization, distalization and extraction. The management of badly decayed, broken down and missing first molars will be discussed.
- Second Molars - Horizontal and vertical aspects of second molars will be discussed. The controversial subject of second molar extraction will be reviewed. Cases will be presented in an attempt to provide an objective review of this subject.
- Retention - The etiology of orthodontic relapse will be discussed, and various techniques of the retention process will be presented.
